Can WPC wall panels get moldy, infested with insects,or damaged by termites?
WPC (wood-plastic composite) wall panels are extremely resistant to mold growth, insect infestation, and termite damage under normal manufacturing conditions; their resistance to biological attacks is far greater than that of natural wood. However, this does not mean there is absolutely no risk at all. The key aspects of their resistance are as follows:
**Key Resistance Features**
– **Mold and moisture resistance**: WPC has a very low water absorption rate (around 1.5%), with no free moisture inside, which prevents the growth of fungi. Quality products contain antimicrobial agents, and they do not develop mold or fungi even after being tested under high temperature and humidity conditions.
– **Insect and termite resistance**: The plastic matrix surrounds the wood fibers, thereby blocking the sources of food for pests. Most of these products contain chemicals that repel insects and termites, so they cannot eat or are unwilling to eat the material, resulting in a much lower rate of quality loss compared to wood.
**Potential Risks and Exceptions**
Despite their strong resistance, certain issues may arise under extreme or substandard conditions:
– **Risk from low-quality materials**: If too much wood powder is used, the plastic coating is incomplete, or antiseptic agents are not added as required, then in a highly humid and enclosed environment, it is theoretically possible for tiny amounts of wood fibers to be damaged by termites (this is not common and occurs only in rare cases).
– **Mold on the surface**: Although the wall panel itself does not develop mold, if water accumulates in the gaps where the panels are installed or dust builds up and is not cleaned regularly, mold may grow on the surface. This can be removed by wiping it clean; it is not a sign of internal decay of the material.
– **Problems at joints**: The panels themselves are resistant to mold, but inferior sealants used during installation may blacken and develop mold. It is necessary to use neutral silicone sealants with high mold resistance for sealing purposes.
